Borana-Arsi-Guji Oromo Grammar - Give your Opinion

In this lesson, we will learn how to give opinions in Borana-Arsi-Guji Oromo. We will discover some useful adjectives and how to use them.

Giving opinions

In English, we use different adjectives to give opinions, such as "good", "bad", "interesting", "boring", etc. In Borana-Arsi-Guji Oromo, we also have adjectives to express our opinions. Let's learn some of them:

Borana-Arsi-Guji Oromo Pronunciation English
baayyeef /baːjjeːf/ good
jordadhuu /dʒɔrdadhuː/ bad
arfichiisu /aɾfitʃiisu/ interesting
qabaachuun /qabaːtʃuːn/ boring
dukkana /dukkaːna/ easy
gaari /gaːri/ difficult
qabaqabaa /qabaqabaː/ delicious
cufcinnaa /tʃufʃinnaa/ disgusting
hinjirruu /hinʤiɾruː/ beautiful
waangariiruu /waːŋgaɾiːruː/ ugly

To use these adjectives, we put them after the noun they describe. For example:

  • Borana-Arsi-Guji Oromo: Haraamallee baayyeef.
  • English: The food is good.
  • Borana-Arsi-Guji Oromo: Bilisummaa jordadhuu.
  • English: Freedom is bad.
  • Borana-Arsi-Guji Oromo: Walaloo arfichiisu.
  • English: The story is interesting.
  • Borana-Arsi-Guji Oromo: Korme qabaachuun.
  • English: The lesson is boring.
  • Borana-Arsi-Guji Oromo: Amma dabalata tokko dukkana.
  • English: But this exercise is easy.
  • Borana-Arsi-Guji Oromo: Amma seena qabqabe tokko gootan.
  • English: But this meat is delicious.
  • Borana-Arsi-Guji Oromo: Humni namatti fedhii hinjirruu.
  • English: The dress that you are wearing is beautiful.
  • Borana-Arsi-Guji Oromo: Janiisaa wal jaaqallu waangariiruu.
  • English: Janisaa's hair is ugly when she cuts it short.

To reinforce what we have learned, let's practice using adjectives to give opinions in a dialogue.

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: Haraamalle baayyeef. (The food is good.)
  • Person 2: Eebbisaa qabaqabaa? (Is the meat delicious?)
  • Person 1: Yaa, qabaqabaa. (Yes, it's delicious.)
  • Person 2: Bilisummaa jordadhuu. (Freedom is bad.)
  • Person 1: Adee, bilisummaan duuti jordadhuu. (Yes, the situation with freedom is bad.)
  • Person 2: Walaloo arfichiisu. (The story is interesting.)
  • Person 1: Booda gareen gaari. (But the movie was difficult.)
