French Vocabulary - Be Polite

Hi French learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn how to be polite in French. We will learn the most important phrases and words you need to know to be polite in French.

Today, we will be learning about how to be polite in French. Being polite is an important aspect of French culture, and it is essential to know the right words and expressions to use in different situations. So, let's get started!

Greetings

When meeting someone for the first time, it's important to use formal greetings.

Instead of saying "Salut" or "Bonjour," you should use "Bonjour, Monsieur/Madame/Mademoiselle" (Hello, Sir/Madam/Miss).

If you're meeting someone you know well, you can use "Salut" or "Coucou" (Hi/Hey).

Saying please and thank you

In French, "please" is "s'il vous plaît" or "s'il te plaît" (formal/informal).

It's important to use these phrases when making a request, such as "Pouvez-vous m'aider, s'il vous plaît?" (Can you help me, please?).

Saying "thank you" is equally important. In French, it is "merci." You can also say "merci beaucoup" (thank you very much) or "je vous remercie" (I thank you).

Apologizing

If you make a mistake or inconvenience someone, it's important to apologize.

In French, "I'm sorry" is "Je suis désolé(e)" (formal/informal). For example, "Je suis désolé(e) de vous déranger" (I'm sorry to bother you).

Excusing yourself

If you need to leave a conversation or a room, it's polite to excuse yourself.

In French, you can say "Excusez-moi" (formal) or "Pardonnez-moi" (formal) or "Je m'excuse" (informal).

Using polite phrases

When asking for something or offering help, it's polite to use phrases such as "Je vous en prie" (You're welcome), "Avec plaisir" (With pleasure), "Je vous en prie, après vous" (Please, after you) or "Je suis à votre disposition" (I am at your disposal).

These are just a few examples of how to be polite in French. Remember, using polite expressions and phrases shows respect and consideration for others. So, practice using them in your daily life and you'll see how much it will help you in your interactions with French speakers.
