Forms of the Verb

The verb "have" has two forms in Central Kurdish: the present tense form and the past tense form. The present tense form is hev (هەو) and the past tense form is hevî (هەوی).

Present Tense

The present tense form of the verb "have" is used to express possession or ownership in the present. For example:

  • Person 1: Hevê tu çi? (هەوە تو چی؟)
 * Translation: What do you have?
  • Person 2: Ez hevê kaxezekî. (ئێز هەوە کاخێزەکی.)

  • Person 1: Hevî tu çi bû? (هەوی تو چی بوو؟)

The verb "have" can also be used to express other concepts, such as obligation, necessity, and ability.

The verb "have" can be used to express obligation or necessity. For example:

  • Person 1: Tu hewceyî çi bikî? (تو هووچێی چی بکێ؟)

  • Person 2: Ez hewceyî xwendinê bikim. (ئێز هووچێی خوێندنێ بکێم.)

Ability

The verb "have" can also be used to express ability. For example:

  • Person 1: Tu çi dikarî? (تو چی دیکاری؟)
 * Translation: What can you do?
  • Person 2: Ez dikarim zimanê kurdî bibêjim. (ئێز دیکاریم زمانێ کوردی بیبێجم.)
 * Translation: I can speak Kurdish.

Examples

Central Kurdish Pronunciation English Translation
Hevê tu çi? Hevê tu çi? What do you have?
Ez hevê kaxezekî. Ez hevê kaxezekî. I have a car.
Hevî tu çi bû? Hevî tu çi bû? What did you have?
Ez hevî kaxezekî bûm. Ez hevî kaxezekî bûm. I had a car.
Tu hewceyî çi bikî? Tu hewceyî çi bikî? What do you have to do?
Ez hewceyî xwendinê bikim. Ez hewceyî xwendinê bikim. I have to study.
Tu çi dikarî? Tu çi dikarî? What can you do?
Ez dikarim zimanê kurdî bibêjim. Ez dikarim zimanê kurdî bibêjim. I can speak Kurdish.
