Korean Grammar - How to Use "Have"

Hi Korean learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn how to use the verb "have" in Korean. We will look at the different forms of the verb and how to use them in sentences.

Conjugation

The verb "have" in Korean is κ°–λ‹€ (gatda). It is an irregular verb, so it does not follow the normal conjugation rules. Here are the different forms of the verb:

Form Pronunciation English Translation
κ°–λ‹€ gatda to have
κ°–κ³  μžˆλ‹€ gatgo itda to have (present tense)
κ°–κ³  μžˆμ—ˆλ‹€ gatgo iteutda to have (past tense)
κ°–κ³  μžˆμ„ 것이닀 gatgo iteul geosida to have (future tense)

Usage

The verb "have" is used to express possession or ownership. It can also be used to express the existence of something. Here are some examples of how to use the verb "have" in sentences:

  • Person 1: μ €λŠ” 책을 κ°–κ³  μžˆμ–΄μš”. (jeoneun chaeg-eul gatgo itseoyo.)
 * Translation: I have a book.
  • Person 2: λ‚˜λŠ” μΉœκ΅¬κ°€ μ—†μ–΄μš”. (naneun chinguga eopseoyo.)
 * Translation: I don't have any friends.
  • Person 1: μ €λŠ” 집이 μžˆμ–΄μš”. (jeoneun jibi itseoyo.)
 * Translation: I have a house.
  • Person 2: λ‚˜λŠ” μ°¨κ°€ μ—†μ–΄μš”. (naneun chaga eopseoyo.)
 * Translation: I don't have a car.

Practice

Now it's time to practice using the verb "have" in Korean. Try to make your own sentences using the different forms of the verb. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • I have a dog.
  • I had a cat.
  • I will have a fish.
  • I don't have a bike.
  • I didn't have a phone.
  • I won't have a bird.
