Ukrainian Grammar - How to Use "Be"

Hi Ukrainian learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn how to use the verb "be" in Ukrainian. We will look at some examples of how it is used in context.

The verb "be" in Ukrainian is бути (buty). It is an irregular verb, which means that it does not follow the same conjugation pattern as regular verbs. The conjugation of the verb "be" in the present tense is as follows:

Person Ukrainian Pronunciation English Translation
I я буваю ya buvayu I am
You ти буваєш ty buvayesh You are
He/She/It він/вона/воно буває vin/vono/vono buvaye He/She/It is
We ми буваємо my buvayemo We are
You (plural) ви буваєте vy buvayete You are
They вони бувають vono buvayut They are

Here are some examples of how the verb "be" is used in context:

  • Person 1: Як справи? (Yak spravy?) (How are you?)
  • Person 2: Добре, дякую. А ти? (Dobre, dyakuyu. A ty?) (Good, thank you. And you?)
  • Person 1: Я добре. (Ya dobre.) (I'm good.)
  • Person 1: Де ти живеш? (De ty zhivesh?) (Where do you live?)
  • Person 2: Я живу в Києві. (Ya zhivu v Kyevi.) (I live in Kyiv.)
  • Person 1: Хто це? (Khto tse?) (Who is this?)
  • Person 2: Це мій друг. (Tse miy druh.) (This is my friend.)
