Hindi Grammar - How to Use "Be"

In this lesson, we will learn how to use the verb "be" in Hindi. We will look at the different forms of the verb and how to use them in sentences. We will also look at some examples of sentences using the verb "be".

The verb "be" is used to express existence, identity, or a state of being. In Hindi, the verb "be" is conjugated differently depending on the subject of the sentence. The verb "be" can be conjugated in the present, past, and future tenses.

The verb "be" in Hindi is conjugated as follows:

Person Singular Plural
First हूँ (hū̃) हैं (hē̃)
Second हो (ho) हैं (hē̃)
Third है (hai) हैं (hē̃)

Let's look at some examples of sentences using the verb "be":

  • Person 1: मैं हूँ (maĩ hū̃) - I am
  • Person 2: तू हो (tū ho) - You are
  • Person 3: वह है (vah hai) - He/She is
  • Person 4: हम हैं (ham hē̃) - We are
  • Person 5: आप हैं (āp hē̃) - You are
  • Person 6: वे हैं (vē hē̃) - They are

Now let's look at some examples of sentences using the verb "be" in the past tense:

  • Person 1: मैं था (maĩ thā) - I was
  • Person 2: तू था (tū thā) - You were
  • Person 3: वह था (vah thā) - He/She was
  • Person 4: हम थे (ham thē) - We were
  • Person 5: आप थे (āp thē) - You were
  • Person 6: वे थे (vē thē) - They were

Finally, let's look at some examples of sentences using the verb "be" in the future tense:

  • Person 1: मैं रहूँगा (maĩ rahū̃gā) - I will be
  • Person 2: तू रहेगा (tū rahēgā) - You will be
  • Person 3: वह रहेगा (vah rahēgā) - He/She will be
  • Person 4: हम रहेंगे (ham rahē̃gē) - We will be
  • Person 5: आप रहेंगे (āp rahē̃gē) - You will be
  • Person 6: वे रहेंगे (vē rahē̃gē) - They will be
