Adjective Endings

Adjectives in Hungarian have different endings depending on the gender, number, and case of the noun they are describing.

Masculine

For masculine nouns, the endings are as follows:

  • Singular nominative: -i
  • Singular accusative: -it
  • Plural nominative: -ik
  • Plural accusative: -iket

Feminine

For feminine nouns, the endings are as follows:

  • Singular nominative: -a
  • Singular accusative: -at
  • Plural nominative: -ak
  • Plural accusative: -akat

Neuter

For neuter nouns, the endings are as follows:

  • Singular nominative: -o
  • Singular accusative: -ot
  • Plural nominative: -ok
  • Plural accusative: -okat

Comparison of Adjectives

In Hungarian, adjectives can be compared using the suffixes -bb/-ebb (for comparative) and -bb/-ebb/-abb (for superlative).

Comparative

The comparative form of an adjective is used to compare two things. For example:

  • A kutya nagyobb, mint a macska. (The dog is bigger than the cat.)

The comparative suffix for adjectives ending in a consonant is -bb, while the suffix for adjectives ending in a vowel is -ebb.

Superlative

The superlative form of an adjective is used to compare one thing to a group of things. For example:

  • A kutya a legnagyobb az állatok között. (The dog is the biggest among the animals.)

The superlative suffix for adjectives ending in a consonant is -bb/-abb, while the suffix for adjectives ending in a vowel is -ebb/-abb.

Use of Adjectives in Sentences

Adjectives can be used in sentences to describe nouns. For example:

  • Az autó szép. (The car is beautiful.)

Adjectives can also be used to describe verbs. For example:

  • Az autó gyorsan ment. (The car drove quickly.)

Adjectives can also be used to describe other adjectives. For example:

  • Az autó nagyon szép. (The car is very beautiful.)

Finally, adjectives can be used to describe adverbs. For example:

  • Az autó nagyon gyorsan ment. (The car drove very quickly.)

That concludes our lesson on Hungarian grammar related to adjectives. We hope you now have a better understanding of how to use adjectives in Hungarian.
