Twi Grammar - Pronouns

Hi Twi learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing the use of pronouns in the Twi language. Pronouns are words that can be used to replace nouns in a sentence. They are an important part of any language and understanding how to use them correctly is essential for speaking and writing Twi fluently.

Personal Pronouns

Personal pronouns are used to refer to people or things. In Twi, there are two types of personal pronouns: subject pronouns and object pronouns.

Subject Pronouns

Subject pronouns are used when the pronoun is the subject of the sentence. For example, if you want to say "I am going to the store", the pronoun "I" is the subject of the sentence. In Twi, the subject pronouns are:

  • Me -
  • You (singular) -
  • He/She/It -
  • We - Ɛnyɛ
  • You (plural) - Ɛnyɛn
  • They - Ɛnyɛn

For example:

  • Mɛ yɛ kɔɔ makɔtɔ. - I am going to the store.
  • Wɔ yɛ kɔɔ makɔtɔ. - You are going to the store.
  • Ɛnyɛ yɛ kɔɔ makɔtɔ. - We are going to the store.

Object Pronouns

Object pronouns are used when the pronoun is the object of the sentence. For example, if you want to say "He gave me a book", the pronoun "me" is the object of the sentence. In Twi, the object pronouns are:

  • Me - Mɛn
  • You (singular) - Wɔn
  • He/She/It - Yɛn
  • We - Ɛnyɛn

  • Wɔn nso mɛn bɔk. - He gave you a book.
  • Ɛnyɛn nso mɛn bɔk. - He gave us a book.

Possessive Pronouns

Possessive pronouns are used to show ownership or possession. In Twi, the possessive pronouns are:

  • Mine - Mɛnho
  • Yours (singular) - Wɔnho
  • His/Hers/Its - Yɛnho
  • Ours - Ɛnyɛnho
  • Yours (plural) - Ɛnyɛnho
  • Theirs - Ɛnyɛnho

For example:

  • Mɛnho bɔk. - My book.
  • Wɔnho bɔk. - Your book.
  • Ɛnyɛnho bɔk. - Our book.

Demonstrative Pronouns

Demonstrative pronouns are used to point out specific people or things. In Twi, the demonstrative pronouns are:

  • This - Dɛn
  • That -
  • These - Dɛnfo
  • Those - Dɔfo

For example:

  • Dɛn bɔk. - This book.
  • Dɔ bɔk. - That book.
  • Dɛnfo bɔk. - These books.
  • Dɔfo bɔk. - Those books.

Interrogative Pronouns

Interrogative pronouns are used to ask questions. In Twi, the interrogative pronouns are:
