Twi Grammar - Pronouns

Hi Twi learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will be looking at pronouns in Twi. Pronouns are words that take the place of a noun. They are used to avoid repetition and make sentences more concise.

Don't miss the chance to check out these pages as you wrap up this lesson: Future Tense, Twi Grammar: Descriptive Adjectives, Personal Pronouns & Conditional Mood.

Subject Pronouns[edit | edit source]

Subject pronouns are used as the subject of a sentence. Subject pronouns in Twi have just one form, unlike in English where we have different forms for the singular and plural subject pronouns. Below is a table showing the subject pronouns in Twi.

Twi Pronunciation English
Me Me I
Wo Wo You (singular)
Ɔ Ɔ He/She
Yɛn Yenn We
Mo Mo You (plural)
Wɔn Won They

Let's see some examples:

  • Person 1: Yɛfrɛ wo animuonyam. (We see your beauty.)
  • Person 2: Medɛ wo animuonyam. (I see your beauty.)

In the first sentence, "Yɛfrɛ" means "we see" and "wo" is the subject pronoun for "you". In the second sentence, "Medɛ" means "I see" and "wo" is still the subject pronoun for "you".

Object Pronouns[edit | edit source]

Object pronouns are used as the object of a sentence. They are placed after the verb or preposition. Below is a table showing the object pronouns in Twi.

Possessive Pronouns[edit | edit source]

Possessive pronouns are used to show ownership. They replace the noun and the possessive adjective. Below is a table showing the possessive pronouns in Twi.

Reflexive Pronouns[edit | edit source]

Reflexive pronouns are used when the subject and object of a sentence are the same. In Twi, reflexive pronouns are formed by adding "fo" to the personal pronoun. Below is a table showing the reflexive pronouns in Twi.

Interrogative Pronouns[edit | edit source]
