In today's lesson, we will be discussing pronouns in Central Khmer. Pronouns are words that can replace nouns in a sentence. They are used to make sentences shorter and easier to understand. We will look at the different types of pronouns, how they are used, and some examples of their usage.
Personal Pronouns
Personal pronouns are used to refer to people or things. In Central Khmer, there are three types of personal pronouns: singular, dual, and plural.
Singular
Singular pronouns are used to refer to one person or thing. The singular pronouns in Central Khmer are:
- αααα»α (kΙ²om) - I
- α’ααα (neak) - you
- ααΆαα (kΙt) - he/she/it
For example:
- αααα»αααΆαα αααααα αΌαα’ααααααααα αΎα (kΙ²om bΙt cΙΕ bΙnclou ΙtΙb dΙnΙh hΙy) - I want to submit this article now.
- α’αααααΆαα αααααα αΌαα’ααααααααα αΎα (neak bΙt cΙΕ bΙnclou ΙtΙb dΙnΙh hΙy) - You want to submit this article now.
- ααΆααααΆαα αααααα αΌαα’ααααααααα αΎα (kΙt bΙt cΙΕ bΙnclou ΙtΙb dΙnΙh hΙy) - He/She/It wants to submit this article now.
Dual
Dual pronouns are used to refer to two people or things. The dual pronouns in Central Khmer are:
- ααΎα (yeung) - we (two people)
- α’αααααΈα (neak pii) - you (two people)
- αα½ααα (puuk kee) - they (two people)
For example:
- ααΎαααΆαα αααααα αΌαα’ααααααααα αΎα (yeung bΙt cΙΕ bΙnclou ΙtΙb dΙnΙh hΙy) - We want to submit this article now.
- α’αααααΈαααΆαα αααααα αΌαα’ααααααααα αΎα (neak pii bΙt cΙΕ bΙnclou ΙtΙb dΙnΙh hΙy) - You (two people) want to submit this article now.
- αα½αααααΆαα αααααα αΌαα’ααααααααα αΎα (puuk kee bΙt cΙΕ bΙnclou ΙtΙb dΙnΙh hΙy) - They (two people) want to submit this article now.
Plural
Plural pronouns are used to refer to more than two people or things. The plural pronouns in Central Khmer are:
- ααΎαα αααΎα (yeung crΙΙn) - we (more than two people)
- α’αααα αααΎα (neak crΙΙn) - you (more than two people)
- αα½αααα αααΎα (puuk kee crΙΙn) - they (more than two people)
For example:
- ααΎαα αααΎαααΆαα αααααα αΌαα’ααααααααα αΎα (yeung crΙΙn bΙt cΙΕ bΙnclou ΙtΙb dΙnΙh hΙy) - We (more than two people) want to submit this article now.
- α’αααα αααΎαααΆαα αααααα αΌαα’ααααααααα αΎα (neak crΙΙn bΙt cΙΕ bΙnclou ΙtΙb dΙnΙh hΙy) - You (more than two people) want to submit this article now.
- αα½αααα αααΎαααΆαα αααααα αΌαα’ααααααααα αΎα (puuk kee crΙΙn bΙt cΙΕ bΙnclou ΙtΙb dΙnΙh hΙy) - They (more than two people) want to submit this article now.
Demonstrative Pronouns
Demonstrative pronouns are used to point out people or things. In Central Khmer, there are four types of demonstrative pronouns: near, far, near-plural, and far-plural.
Near
Near demonstrative pronouns are used to refer to people or things that are close by. The near demonstrative pronouns in Central Khmer are:
- ααα (nΙh) - this
- ααα (nuh) - that
For example:
- αααααΆα’αααααααααααα»αααΆαα αααααα αΌα (nΙh cie ΙtΙb dΙl kΙ²om bΙt cΙΕ bΙnclou) - This is the article that I want to submit.
- αααααΆα’ααααααααα’αααααΆαα αααααα αΌα (nuh cie ΙtΙb dΙl neak bΙt cΙΕ bΙnclou) - That is the article that you want to submit.
Far
Far demonstrative pronouns are used to refer to people or things that are far away. The far demonstrative pronouns in Central Khmer are:
- αα ααΈααα (nΙv tii nΙh) - this (far away)
- αα ααΈααα (nΙv tii nuh) - that (far away)
For example:
- αα ααΈαααααΆα’αααααααααααα»αααΆαα αααααα αΌα (nΙv tii nΙh cie ΙtΙb dΙl kΙ²om bΙt cΙΕ bΙnclou) - This (far away) is the article that I want to submit.
- αα ααΈαααααΆα’ααααααααα’αααααΆαα αααααα αΌα (nΙv tii nuh cie ΙtΙb dΙl neak bΙt cΙΕ bΙnclou) - That (far away) is the article that you want to submit.
Near-Plural
Near-plural demonstrative pronouns are used to refer to multiple people or things that are close by. The near-plural demonstrative pronouns in Central Khmer are:
- ααΆααααα (teung nΙh) - these
- ααΆααααα (teung nuh) - those
For example:
- ααΆαααααααΆα’ααααα
