Overview[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood is used to express a hypothetical situation or condition. It is used to talk about what would happen if something were true. In Central Khmer, the conditional mood is formed by adding a suffix to the verb.

Formation[edit | edit source]

The suffix used to form the conditional mood depends on the type of verb. For regular verbs, the suffix is "-sɔɔ". For irregular verbs, the suffix is "-tɔɔ".

Regular Verbs[edit | edit source]

For regular verbs, the suffix "-sɔɔ" is added to the verb stem. For example, the verb "to eat" is "kɔɔn". To form the conditional mood, the suffix "-sɔɔ" is added to the verb stem, resulting in "kɔɔnsɔɔ".

Irregular Verbs[edit | edit source]

For irregular verbs, the suffix "-tɔɔ" is added to the verb stem. For example, the verb "to be" is "bɔɔ". To form the conditional mood, the suffix "-tɔɔ" is added to the verb stem, resulting in "bɔɔtɔɔ".

Usage[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood is used to express a hypothetical situation or condition. It is used to talk about what would happen if something were true. For example:

  • If I had more time, I would learn Central Khmer. (Kɔɔnsɔɔ mɔɔ kɔɔn bɔɔtɔɔ sɔɔm kɔɔn khmɛr.)
  • If I had money, I would buy a car. (Kɔɔnsɔɔ mɔɔ kɔɔn bɔɔtɔɔ sɔɔm kɔɔn tɔɔm.)
