Hi Hungarian learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about the gender of Hungarian nouns. We will look at the rules for determining the gender of a noun and then practice with some examples. Finally, we will take a quiz to test our understanding. Let's get started!
Rules
In Hungarian, nouns can be either masculine, feminine or neuter. The gender of a noun is usually determined by its ending. Here are the rules for determining the gender of a noun:
- Masculine nouns usually end in -a, -e, -i, -o, -u, -ö, -ő, -ú, -ü, -ű.
- Feminine nouns usually end in -a, -e, -i, -o, -u, -ö, -ő, -ú, -ü, -ű, -á, -é, -í, -ó, -ú.
- Neuter nouns usually end in -a, -e, -i, -o, -u, -ö, -ő, -ú, -ü, -ű, -elem, -lom, -tér, -ság, -ség, -ső, -sű.
Note that there are exceptions to these rules. For example, some nouns ending in -a can be either masculine or feminine.
