Southern Sotho Grammar - Future Tense

Hi Southern Sotho learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about the future tense in Southern Sotho. We will look at how to form the future tense, as well as some examples of how it is used.

The future tense in Southern Sotho is formed by adding the suffix -a to the verb stem. This suffix is added to the verb stem regardless of the subject. For example, the verb stem for the verb "to go" is -leka, so the future tense of "to go" is -lekaa.

Examples

Here are some examples of the future tense in Southern Sotho:

Southern Sotho Pronunciation English Translation
Ke lekaa keh-leh-kah I will go
O lekaa oh-leh-kah You will go
A lekaa ah-leh-kah He/She will go
Re lekaa reh-leh-kah We will go
Ba lekaa bah-leh-kah They will go

The future tense can also be used to express an intention or a plan. For example, if you want to say "I am going to the store", you would say "Ke lekaa go tlhokomela".

The future tense can also be used to express a prediction or a probability. For example, if you want to say "He will probably go to the store", you would say "A lekaa go tlhokomela".
