Urdu Grammar - Future Tense

Hi Urdu learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about the future tense in Urdu. We will look at how to form sentences in the future tense and how to use them in conversation.

The future tense is used to talk about events that will happen in the future. In Urdu, the future tense is formed by adding the suffix -e ga- to the verb stem. For example, the verb “to go” is jaanaa in Urdu. To form the future tense, we add the suffix -e ga- to the verb stem, so the future tense of “to go” is jaane ga-.

Let’s look at some examples of how to use the future tense in Urdu:

Urdu Pronunciation English Translation
میں آج جانے گا mai aaj jaane ga I will go today
وہ کل جانے گا wo kal jaane ga He will go tomorrow
ہم سونے گے hum sonne ga We will listen
تم کہنے گے tum kehne ga You will say
وہ لگائے گا wo lagaaye ga He will put

As you can see, the future tense is formed by adding the suffix -e ga- to the verb stem. It is important to note that the verb stem must be in its infinitive form.

The future tense can also be used to make predictions about the future. For example:

Urdu Pronunciation English Translation
وہ نہیں آئے گا wo nahi aaye ga He will not come
تم کمزور ہو جاؤ tum kamzoor ho jaao You will become weak
ہم بھی کمزور ہو جائیں گے hum bhi kamzoor ho jaain ga We will also become weak
وہ بھی کمزور ہو جائے گا wo bhi kamzoor ho jaaye ga He will also become weak
میں بھی کمزور ہو جاؤں گا mai bhi kamzoor ho jaaun ga I will also become weak

It is important to note that the future tense can also be used to express wishes or hopes for the future. For example:

Urdu Pronunciation English Translation
میں آئے گا mai aaye ga I will come
وہ بھی آئے گا wo bhi aaye ga He will also come
ہم بھی آئے گے hum bhi aain ga We will also come
تم بھی آئے گے tum bhi aain ga You will also come
وہ بھی آئے گا wo bhi aaye ga He will also come

Now that you know how to form sentences in the future tense, let’s practice using them in conversation. Here are some examples of conversations in the future tense:

Urdu Pronunciation English Translation
آپ کہاں جائیں گے؟ aap kahan jaain ga? Where will you go?
میں آج بازار جائے گا mai aaj bazaar jaaye ga I will go to the market today
ہم آئے گے؟ hum aain ga? Will we come?
نہیں، تم بھی نہیں آئے گے nahi, tum bhi nahi aain ga No, you will not come either
کب آئے گے؟ kab aaye ga? When will he come?
وہ شام کو آئے گا wo sham ko aaye ga He will come in the evening

As you can see, the future tense is used to talk about events that will happen in the future. It can also be used to make predictions about the future and to express wishes or hopes for the future.

Practice using the future tense in conversation and you will soon become more confident in your Urdu speaking skills.
