Odia Grammar - Negation

Hi Odia learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about negation in Odia. Negation is the process of making a statement negative. It is an important part of Odia grammar and it is essential to understand how to use it correctly.

Negation is used to express the opposite of a statement. In Odia, there are two ways to make a statement negative: using the negative particle ନା (na) or using the negative verb ନହୁଆ (nahuā).

The negative particle ନା (na) is used to make a statement negative. It is placed before the verb in a sentence. For example:

  • ମୋ ଗାଉଛି (mō gāući) - I am going
  • ମୋ ନା ଗାଉଛି (mō na gāući) - I am not going

The negative verb ନହୁଆ (nahuā) is used to make a statement negative. It is placed after the verb in a sentence. For example:

  • ମୋ ଖାଇଛି (mō khāići) - I am eating
  • ମୋ ଖାଇନହୁଆ (mō khāinahuā) - I am not eating

It is important to note that the negative particle ନା (na) cannot be used with the negative verb ନହୁଆ (nahuā). For example:

  • ମୋ ଖାଇନହୁଆ (mō khāinahuā) - I am not eating
  • ମୋ ନା ଖାଇନହୁଆ (mō na khāinahuā) - Incorrect

Here are some examples of sentences using negation in Odia:

Odia Pronunciation English Translation
ମୋ ନା ଗାଉଛି mō na gāući I am not going
ତୁ ନା ଆସିଛୁ tu na āsićhu You are not coming
ତେଣୁ ନା କରିଛୁ teṇu na karićhu He/She is not doing
ଆମେ ନା ଜଣାଇଛି āme na jaṇāićhi We are not seeing
ତେରେ ନା ଶୁଣିଛୁ tere na śuṇićhu They are not hearing

It is also possible to use the negative particle ନା (na) with adjectives and adverbs. For example:

  • ମୋ ଖୁବ ଗୁଡ଼ିକ ଗାଉଛି (mō khuba guḍika gāući) - I am going very quickly
  • ମୋ ନା ଖୁବ ଗୁଡ଼ିକ ଗାଉଛି (mō na khuba guḍika gāući) - I am not going very quickly

It is also possible to use the negative verb ନହୁଆ (nahuā) with adjectives and adverbs. For example:

  • ମୋ ଖୁବ ଗୁଡ଼ିକ ଖାଇଛି (mō khuba guḍika khāići) - I am eating very quickly
  • ମୋ ଖୁବ ଗୁଡ଼ିକ ଖାଇନହୁଆ (mō khuba guḍika khāinahuā) - I am not eating very quickly

It is important to remember that the negative particle ନା (na) and the negative verb ନହୁଆ (nahuā) cannot be used together.

Now that you have learned about negation in Odia, you can start using it in your own sentences. Practice makes perfect, so don't forget to practice your new skills!
