Welcome to the Tamil Grammar lesson on Plurals! In this lesson, we will learn how to form plurals in Tamil.
Introduction
Tamil is a language spoken by more than 70 million people around the world. It is the official language of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and one of the 22 scheduled languages of India. Tamil is also spoken in Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Mauritius, and other countries.
In Tamil, nouns can be singular or plural. The plural form of a noun is used when referring to more than one person, place, or thing. In this lesson, we will learn how to form plurals in Tamil.
Plural Formation
In Tamil, there are two ways to form plurals:
- Adding a suffix
- Reduplication
Adding a Suffix
The most common way to form plurals in Tamil is by adding a suffix. The suffixes used to form plurals depend on the gender of the noun.
For masculine nouns, the suffix -ar is added. For example, the plural of kalvi (school) is kalvar.
For feminine nouns, the suffix -al is added. For example, the plural of ponnu (girl) is ponnal.
For neuter nouns, the suffix -ar is added. For example, the plural of oru (one) is orar.
Reduplication
Another way to form plurals in Tamil is by reduplication. This means repeating the same word twice. For example, the plural of kadai (shop) is kadaikadai.
Reduplication is used for both masculine and feminine nouns. However, it is not used for neuter nouns.
