As a beginner learning a new language, it is important to start off with the basics. In this lesson, we will be learning the Irish words for the four seasons and the twelve months of the year. Knowing these words will help you to describe the time of year and will be useful in everyday conversation. Let's get started!
Seasons
The four seasons are a common topic of conversation in Ireland as the weather can change quite dramatically throughout the year. Here are the Irish words for the four seasons:
Irish | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
An t-earrach | on tye-rockh | Spring |
An samhradh | on sow-ruh | Summer |
An fómhar | on fow-ur | Autumn/Fall |
An Geimhreadh | on gay-vruh | Winter |
It is useful to note that the word "an" in front of each season means "the". So "an t-earrach" means "the Spring".
Months
The twelve months of the year are also important to know. Here are the Irish words for each month:
Irish | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
Eanáir | an-aw-ir | January |
Feabhra | foh-ruh | February |
Márta | mawr-tuh | March |
Aibreán | ab-rawn | April |
Bealtaine | byowl-tin-uh | May |
Meitheamh | meh-hiv | June |
Iúil | you-il | July |
Lúnasa | loo-nuh-suh | August |
Meán Fómhair | mawn fow-ur | September |
Deireadh Fómhair | der-uh fow-ur | October |
Samhain | sow-in | November |
Nollaig | null-ig | December |
It can be useful to remember that "Fómhair" means "Harvest" while "Deireadh" means "End" and "Meán" means "Middle".
With these words, you can now describe the time of year or say what month you were born in. For example, you could say "Tá mé rugadh i mí an Mhárta" which means "I was born in March".
Remember to practice these words and try to use them in everyday conversation!
