The Present Tense

In Irish, the present tense is used to describe actions or events that are currently happening, or to express habits or routines.

To form the present tense of regular verbs in Irish, follow these rules:

• For verbs ending in -ail, -ailt, -eail, -eil, -éil, or -igh, remove the ending and add the appropriate ending based on the subject pronoun.
• For verbs ending in -aim, -aím, -ím, -oir, -ugadh, remove the ending and add the appropriate ending based on the subject pronoun.
• For verbs ending in -ailg, -áil, or -aill, remove the ending and add the appropriate ending based on the subject pronoun.
• For verbs ending in -ean, -eanaí, -iúil, -lann, -nna, -rann, -rath, -rthaí, -rthaigh, -rthaíonn, -soinn, -táil, -tar, or -tear, remove the ending and add the appropriate ending based on the subject pronoun.
• For verbs ending in -eodh or -ódh, remove the ending and add the appropriate ending based on the subject pronoun.
• For verbs ending in -ailtear, -far, or -tear, remove the ending and add the appropriate ending based on the subject pronoun.

Here are some examples of present tense verbs in Irish based on the different endings:

Verbs Ending in -ail

Bíonn muid ag cailleadh	b'yo:n mwid ag kail'-yoo	We are losing
Taistealann siad go minic	tash-t'alan shee-ad guh min'-ik	They often travel
Dúnann sí an doras	doo-nan shee an dor-as	She closes the door

Verbs Ending in -aim

Irish	Pronunciation	English
Cloisim ceol	kl'ish-im k'ol	I hear music
Imíonn sé sa tsiúlóid	i-mee-un shay sa t-shoo-lohj	He goes for a walk
Fógraíonn siad an miontraí	foh-gree-un shee-ad an meen-tree	They announce the teacher

Verbs Ending in -ailg

Irish	Pronunciation	English
Molaim an obair sin	mowl'-im an ob'-ir shin	I praise that work
Spreagann sé an lucht féachana	spra-gan shay an loo-ct fay-uh-khan-ah	He inspires the audience
Tógann siad na leabhair	toh-gan shee-ad na lyow-ir	They pick up the books

Verbs Ending in -ean

Irish	Pronunciation	English
Déanann sí suas é	day-nan shee soo-us ay	She makes it up
Ólann sé an tae	oh-lan shay an tay	He drinks the tea
Bíonn muid ag ithe	bee-un mwid ag ih	We are eating

Verbs Ending in -eodh

Irish	Pronunciation	English
Déanfaidh sé sin	dayn-fee shay shin	He will do that
Éireoidh mé go luath	ay-ruh-ee shmay guh loo-ah	I will wake up early
Imeacht na mbó	i-mahkt na moh	The cows will leave

Verbs Ending in -ailtear

Irish	Pronunciation	English
Sleamhnaítear an tslí seo	shlamh-nee-tar an tsl'ee sho	This road is slippery
Teastaíonn an t-airgead	chass-tee-un an t-arrig-id	The money is needed
Beirtear na plandaí	ber-tar-a na plan-dee	The plants are carried

It's important to remember these different conjugation patterns and to practice them regularly in order to become more comfortable and confident in using Irish verbs in the present tense.
