In this lesson, you will learn how to introduce yourself and others in Icelandic. Introducing yourself is one of the first things you should learn when beginning a new language, as it helps you to engage in conversation and interact with locals. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to confidently introduce yourself to others and ask and provide information about names and occupations.

Basic Greetings

Before we dive into introducing ourselves, let's start with some basic Icelandic greetings that you can use in everyday situations:

  • Hæ – Hello (informal)
  • Góðan daginn – Good day (formal)
  • Bless – Goodbye
  • Takk fyrir – Thank you

Introducing Yourself

Introducing yourself in Icelandic is relatively simple. You start by saying "Ég heiti..." followed by your name. "Ég" means "I," and "heiti" means "am called."

For example:

  • Ég heiti Anna. - My name is Anna.

If you want to ask someone their name, you can say:

  • Hvað heitir þú? – What is your name?

To answer, simply say "Ég heiti..." followed by your name, as mentioned above.

Next, let's look at how to say "I am a...". To do this, you say "Ég er..." followed by your occupation or what you do.

For example:

  • Ég er kennari. – I am a teacher.
  • Ég er læknir. – I am a doctor.
  • Ég er lögmaður. – I am a lawyer.

If you want to ask someone about their occupation, you can say:

  • Hvað vinnur þú? - What do you do?

To answer, simply say "Ég er..." followed by your occupation.
