Colors in Amharic

Amharic has many words to describe colors. Here are some of the most common ones:

Amharic Pronunciation English
ቀለም (qälam) kʼalam black
ጥቁር (tikʼur) tikʼur dark
አረፍተ (äräfta) arəfta white
ስልቀት (sɨlläqit) silləqit silver
መለወጫ (mäläwwächa) məlawwacha gold
ቀንድ (qänd) känd brown
ብርቱዎች (bərtuwotch) bərtuwotch gray

As you can see, some words may have different translations depending on the context. For example, "silləqit" can mean both "silver" and "grey," and "tikʼur" can mean "dark" as well as "black."

It's important to note that color words in Amharic can be used as both adjectives and nouns. In addition, they match the gender and number of the noun they modify. For example, "qaläd" (red) becomes "qalädən" when modifying a feminine noun, and "qalädəw" when modifying a plural noun.

Here are some examples of how color words can be used in sentences:

  • አቡነ አማራይት ቀለም ተመስገን። (Abuna Amharayit qälam tämeseggen.) - The Ethiopian flag is black.
  • እንደገና ምግብ ብርሃን እና አረፍተ ያሉት ናቸው። (Endegena migib brăhan ənä arəfta yalutä nachew.) - Bananas and milk are white.
