Introduction

Welcome to the "Complete 0 to A1 Catalan Course". In this lesson, we will focus on vocabulary related to family members and relationships in Catalan. You will learn words for parents, siblings, and extended family as well as phrases for describing relationships. Vocabulary

Below you will find a list of Catalan vocabulary related to family members and relationships. The Catalan word is listed first, followed by the pronunciation and English translation.

Parents

The word for mother is "mare". It is pronounced "MAH-reh".

The word for father is "pare". It is pronounced "PAH-reh".

The word for parents (plural) is "pares". It is pronounced "PAH-rehs".

Siblings

The word for brother is "germà". It is pronounced "zhehr-MAH".

The word for sister is "germana". It is pronounced "zhehr-MAH-nah".

The word for siblings (plural) is "germans". It is pronounced "zhehr-MAHNS".

Extended Family

The word for grandparents is "avis". It is pronounced "AH-bees".

The word for grandfather is "avi". It is pronounced "AH-bee".

The word for grandmother is "àvia". It is pronounced "AH-bee-yah".

The word for aunt is "tia". It is pronounced "TEE-yah".

The word for uncle is "oncle". It is pronounced "OHN-kleh".

Describing Relationships

The word for family is "família". It is pronounced "fah-MEE-lee-yah".

The word for relative is "parent". It is pronounced "pah-REHNT".

The word for married is "casat" (for men) or "casada" (for women). It is pronounced "kah-SAHT" or "kah-SAH-dah".

The word for single is "solter" (for men) or "soltera" (for women). It is pronounced "sohl-TEHR" or "sohl-TEH-rah".

The word for divorced is "divorciat" (for men) or "divorciada" (for women). It is pronounced "dee-bohr-SYAHT" or "dee-bohr-SYAH-dah".
