What are Adverbs?
Before we dive into how to use adverbs to describe actions in Yue Chinese, let's first understand what adverbs are. Adverbs are words that modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. They provide more information about the verb, such as how, when, where, why, and how often an action is performed. In English, common adverbs include "quickly," "loudly," "always," and "never."
In Yue Chinese, adverbs are formed by adding the suffix "-咗" (-zo2) to the end of the verb. For example, the verb "run" in Yue Chinese is 跑 (paau2), and the adverb form of this verb is 跑咗 (paau2zo2), which means "ran."
Types of Adverbs in Yue Chinese
Now that we understand what adverbs are, let's discuss the different types of adverbs in Yue Chinese.
Adverbs of Manner
Adverbs of manner describe how an action is performed. In Yue Chinese, adverbs of manner are formed by adding the suffix "-噉" (-gam2) to the end of an adjective. For example, the adjective "happy" in Yue Chinese is 開心 (hoi1sam1), and the adverb form of this adjective is 開心噉 (hoi1sam1gam2), which means "happily." Here are some more examples:
Yue Chinese | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
成功 | sing4gung1 | successfully |
努力 | nou5lik6 | diligently |
平靜 | ping4zing6 | calmly |
順便 | seon6bin6 | conveniently |
Adverbs of Time
Adverbs of time describe when an action is performed. In Yue Chinese, adverbs of time are formed by adding the suffix "-嘅時候" (-ge3si4hau6) to the end of a noun. For example, the noun "yesterday" in Yue Chinese is 昨日 (zok6jat6), and the adverb form of this noun is 昨日嘅時候 (zok6jat6ge3si4hau6), which means "yesterday." Here are some more examples:
Yue Chinese | Pronunciation | English |

今日 | gam1jat6 | today |
明天 | ming4tin1 | tomorrow |
每日 | mui5jat6 | daily |
平時 | ping4si4 | usually |
Adverbs of Place
Adverbs of place describe where an action is performed. In Yue Chinese, adverbs of place are formed by adding the suffix "-嘅地方" (-ge3dei6fong1) to the end of a noun. For example, the noun "home" in Yue Chinese is 屋企 (uk1kei2), and the adverb form of this noun is 屋企嘅地方 (uk1kei2ge3dei6fong1), which means "at home." Here are some more examples:
Yue Chinese | Pronunciation | English |

學校 | hok6haau6 | at school |

Using Adverbs to Describe Actions in Yue Chinese
Now that we have covered the different types of adverbs in Yue Chinese, let's explore how to use them to describe actions. In Yue Chinese, adverbs are usually placed after the verb, but can also appear at the beginning or end of a sentence for emphasis. Let's look at some examples:
- 佢哋昨日去左食咗晚餐喺屋企嘅地方。 (Keui5dei6 zok6jat6 heoi3 zo2 sik6zo2 maan5caan1 hai2 uk1kei2ge3dei6fong1.) "They went to eat dinner at home yesterday."
