What are Coordinating Conjunctions?

Coordinating conjunctions are words that are used to connect words, phrases, or clauses in a sentence. They act as a link or bridge between two or more parts of a sentence. Unlike subordinating conjunctions that create a dependent clause, coordinating conjunctions create an independent clause that can stand alone as a sentence.

In Bengali, the most commonly used coordinating conjunctions are ও (o), এবং (ebong), and আর (ar).

ও (o)

The conjunction ও (o) is used to connect nouns or noun phrases. It is used to add or continue information and is equivalent to the English conjunction "and".

Examples:

Bengali	Pronunciation	English
আমি দেশে গিয়ে ভালো লাগলো। তারপর (o) বাসায় ফিরে এসেছি।	Ami deshe giye bhalo laglo. Tarpor (o) bashay fire eshechi.	I had a good time in the country. Afterwards (o) I came back home.
তিনি সোনার নকশার জুড়ি পরে একটি নীল পোশাক পরে। সে চোখ বন্দ করে এক কিউট প্রস্তাব দিলো। অবর্তমানে (o) সে সন্দেহগ্রস্ত হয়ে গেছে।	Tini sonar nokshar juri pore ekTi nil poshak pore. Se chokh bond kore ek kiut prostaab dilo. Ovortomane (o) se sondhoggrosto hoye geshe.	She wears a blue dress over a golden necklace. She winked and made a cute proposal. Currently (o) she is in doubt.

এবং (ebong)

The conjunction এবং (ebong) is used to connect words, phrases, or clauses. It is used to add or continue information and is equivalent to the English conjunction "and".

তার পরিচিত সব লোক- আমার সহপাঠী সম্প্রদায়ের জন্য স্বর্ণ জুড়ি খুঁজছে। আমার সাথে দেখা হবে অবশ্যই (ebong) লোকটি আমার পরামর্শের উপর জুড়ি কিনেছে।	Tar porichit sob lok- amar shohopathi somprodayer jonno shorn Juri khujche. Amar sathe dekha hobe oboshoyi (ebong) lokti amar poramorsher upor Juri kinechhe.	All of his acquaintances- my classmate, is in search of a gold necklace for his community. I must meet him (ebong) the person who bought a necklace with my recommendation.
আমি ছোট ছিলাম তখন থেকে খুব বিচক্ষণ ছিলাম, পা নয় ক্যান্ডিজ দিয়েই সকল কাজগুলো করতাম। আগে (ebong) এখনও বড় হয়নি!	Ami chot chilam tokhon theke khub bichkshon chilam, pa noy Candy's die sob kajgulo kortam. Age (ebong) ekhono bor hoyne!	I was very smart and capable since I was young, and did all the work with Candy. Before (ebong) I'm still not grown up!

আর (ar)

The conjunction আর (ar) is used to connect sentences or clauses, and mostly used to indicate a contrast or addition. It is equivalent to the English conjunction "and" or "but".

টি শান্তি চাইলেও বেশি একই সমস্যার নিজস্ব ভাষা বুঝতে পরে। আমি হিসেব করছি শব্দগুলো আরও চমৎকার ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে।	Ti shanti chailéò beshi eki samshyar nijosho bhasha bujhto poré. Ami hishéb korchhi shobdogulo aró chômtkar byobohrot hôte paoré.	Ti understands the same problem with her own language even if she desires peace. I assume that the words used can have more applause. (ar) Noya sundar sob sondar “একটা” মহন্তে পানি দিয়ে লাল সুইটে চলে। সুইট যেহেতু নজরে তাকে বেশ নাজেহাল হল, সেই ক্ষণ (ar) মহন্তে হস্তমরিচের দুধ ফাটাবার চেষ্টা করে ছাড়লেন। || Noya sundor shob shondor “èkta” mohonté pani dye lal suité cholé. Suite jéhetu nôjoré také besh nazehal hol, sei kshon (ar) mohonté hastomorich'er dudh fatabar cheshta kore chharléno. || Noya, the beautiful and alluring one, walked on wearing a red suit. Although the suit seemed to admire her, she removed it for a while (ar) and tried to milk the peppercorn. How to Use Coordinating Conjunctions To use coordinating conjunctions in a sentence, you need to follow some basic rules of grammar. Firstly, coordinating conjunctions should be placed between two parts of a sentence that are grammatically equal. For example, two verbs, two nouns, two adjectives or two clauses that complement each other. Secondly, the comma should be placed before the coordinating conjunction, except in short sentences or when there is a specific reason not to use it. If the two parts of the sentence are of unequal grammatical weight, use a subordinating conjunction instead.
