Marathi Grammar → Introduction to Marathi grammar → Adverbs

As a Marathi language teacher with 20 years of experience, I am excited to introduce you to the world of Marathi adverbs. In this lesson, you will learn how to use adverbs to modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. Adverbs are a crucial aspect of Marathi grammar, and mastering their usage will greatly enhance your language skills.

Understanding Adverbs

Adverbs are a part of speech that modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. They provide information about how, when, where, and to what extent an action is performed. For example, in the sentence "He speaks Marathi fluently," the adverb "fluently" modifies the verb "speaks" by providing information about how he speaks.

In Marathi, adverbs are formed by adding "-तो" ("-to") to the adjective stem. For example, the adjective "सुंदर" ("sundar", meaning "beautiful") becomes the adverb "सुंदरतो" ("sundarto", meaning "beautifully").

Types of Adverbs

There are several types of adverbs in Marathi, including:

  • क्रियाविशेषण (kriyavisheshan) - Adverbs of manner, answering the question "how?"
  • कालविशेषण (kaalvisheshan) - Adverbs of time, answering the question "when?"
  • स्थानविशेषण (sthānavisheshan) - Adverbs of place, answering the question "where?"
  • परिमाणविशेषण (parimānavisheshan) - Adverbs of degree, answering the question "to what extent?"

Let's go over each type in more detail.

क्रियाविशेषण (Adverbs of Manner)

Adverbs of manner describe how an action is being done. In Marathi, kriyavisheshan adverbs are formed by adding "-तो" ("-to") to the adjective stem, as mentioned earlier. Here are some examples:

Marathi Pronunciation English
ती गाणी सुंदरतो गाते. tī gāṇī sundarto gāte. She sings beautifully.
मला धीरतो बोलण्याचा शैली आवडतो. malā dhīrto bolaṇyācā śailī āvaḍto. I like to speak slowly.
तो बघतो, पण आरामात नाही. to baghato, paṇ ārāmāt nāhī. He watches, but not comfortably.

Note that some adverbs of manner do not end in "-तो" ("-to"), such as "अाकटयात" ("ākaṭyāt", meaning "rudely") and "फट्याळत" ("phaṭyāḷat", meaning "hastily").

कालविशेषण (Adverbs of Time)

Adverbs of time describe when an action is taking place. In Marathi, kaalvisheshan adverbs usually end in "-त" ("-ta"). Here are some examples:

Marathi Pronunciation English
माझं घर सकाळत ठेवतो. mājhaṃ ghara sakāḷata ṭhevato. I keep my house clean in the morning.
तू किती वेळा रात्री जागतोस? tū kitī vēḷā rātrī jāgatos? How many times do you stay awake at night?
आता मी शाळेत जाणार नाही बरोबर मध्यान्हाच्या वेळेत. ātā mī śāḷeta jāṇāra nāhī barōbar madhyānhācyā vēḷēta. Now, I will not go to school at lunchtime.

स्थानविशेषण (Adverbs of Place)

Adverbs of place describe where an action is taking place. In Marathi, sthānavisheshan adverbs end in "-त" ("-ta"). Here are some examples:

Marathi Pronunciation English
कुत्रे बरोबरच सोबत जातात. kutrē barōbaracā sōbata jātāta. Dogs go everywhere together.
माझं घर खुप सुंदर आहे. mājhaṃ ghara khupa sundar āhē. My house is very beautiful.
त्यांच्याकडे कुठेही प्रवास करायला लागलं नाही. tyāñcākadē kuṭhēhī pravāsa karāyalā lāgalaṃ nāhī. They didn't have to travel anywhere.

परिमाणविशेषण (Adverbs of Degree)

Adverbs of degree describe to what extent an action is taking place. In Marathi, parimānavisheshan adverbs end in "-च" ("-cha"). Here are some examples:

Marathi Pronunciation English
तो माझ्यापेक्षा जास्त नक्की चांगला गाणं आहे. tō mājhyāpēkṣā jāsta nakkī chāṅgalā gāṇaṃ āhē. He definitely sings better than me.
माझं डिनर जोरदार असतंय. mājhaṃ ḍinara jōradāra asataṃy. My dinner is really delicious.
त्यांना खाण्याची भूक खुप असते. tyānnā khāṇyācī bhūka khupa asatē. They are very hungry for food.
