Tigrinya Grammar - Adjectives

Hi Tigrinya learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing adjectives in the Tigrinya language. Adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns and pronouns. They can be used to give more information about a person, place, thing, or idea.

Formation of Adjectives

Adjectives in Tigrinya are formed by adding suffixes to nouns and verbs. The suffixes used depend on the gender and number of the noun being modified.

Masculine Singular

For masculine singular nouns, the suffix -ኣት is added to the end of the noun. For example, the word for "good" is ኣሎ (alu). To make it an adjective, the suffix -ኣት is added, making it ኣሎኣት (aluat).

Feminine Singular

For feminine singular nouns, the suffix -ኣታ is added to the end of the noun. For example, the word for "beautiful" is ኣርኣይ (aray). To make it an adjective, the suffix -ኣታ is added, making it ኣርኣይኣታ (arayat).

Masculine Plural

For masculine plural nouns, the suffix -ኣቶም is added to the end of the noun. For example, the word for "strong" is ኣብል (abli). To make it an adjective, the suffix -ኣቶም is added, making it ኣብልኣቶም (ablotom).

Feminine Plural

For feminine plural nouns, the suffix -ኣቶምታ is added to the end of the noun. For example, the word for "wise" is ኣብልና (ablinna). To make it an adjective, the suffix -ኣቶምታ is added, making it ኣብልናኣቶምታ (ablinnatomta).
