Hi Croatian learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn how to use the verb "be" in Croatian. We will look at the conjugation of the verb, as well as some examples of how it is used in sentences.

The verb "be" in Croatian is "biti". It is an irregular verb, which means that it does not follow the same conjugation pattern as regular verbs. Here is the conjugation of the verb "biti":

Person Singular Plural
1st sam (IPA: [sǎːm]) smo (IPA: [smoː])
2nd si (IPA: [siː]) ste (IPA: [ste])
3rd je (IPA: [je]) su (IPA: [suː])

The verb "biti" is used in many different ways in Croatian. It can be used to express existence, location, possession, and more. Here are some examples of how it is used:

  • To express existence:
  • Person 1: Gdje je moj knjiga? (Where is my book?)

The verb "biti" can also be used to form the passive voice in Croatian. To do this, the verb "biti" is conjugated in the appropriate tense and then followed by the past participle of the main verb. Here is an example:

  • Person 1: Tko je napravio ovo? (Who made this?)
  • Person 2: Ovo je napravljeno od strane njega. (This was made by him.)

Finally, the verb "biti" can also be used to form the future tense in Croatian. To do this, the verb "biti" is conjugated in the appropriate tense and then followed by the infinitive of the main verb. Here is an example:

  • Person 1: Što ćeš raditi sutra? (What will you do tomorrow?)
  • Person 2: Ja ću biti u školi. (I will be in school.)
