Traditional Clothes in Poland
Often considered the national costume of Poland, the Krakowiak Zachodni costume is surely the best known traditional Polish costume, and the most represented abroad. Indeed, Krakow has always been the cultural capital of Poland.
Originally, the girls' costume was quite simple. It took the form we know today in the 18th century, when peasants began to have their own wealth.
The skirt is made from a floral print, most of the time the flowers depicted are roses. The element that varies is the color of the skirt. The best known and surely the most widespread is the red skirt, but there are also green, blue, black and white/beige skirts. At Syrena, our dancers all wear a red skirt but our little Syrenka dancers each have a different colored skirt. One or more golden ribbons are sewn towards the hem.
In the Krakow region, you can see 3 types of aprons to go with this costume: the first type is an apron with the same print as the skirt but in a different color; the second is a simple white linen apron with beautiful embroidery and finally the third type is a thin lace apron that we wear in Syrena.
