- The executive branch is responsible for implementing and administering the laws of the country. It is headed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, who is the constitutional monarch of Malaysia. The monarch is elected by and from the nine hereditary Rulers of the Malay states for a five-year term.
- The legislative branch is responsible for making and passing laws. It consists of two houses, the Dewan Negara (Senate) and the Dewan Rakyat (House of Representatives).
- The judicial branch is responsible for interpreting and enforcing the laws. It includes the Federal Court, the Court of Appeals, the High Courts in each state, and the Sessions Courts and Magistrates Courts in every district.
