Burmese Grammar - How to Use "Be"

The verb "be" is used to describe a state or condition. In Burmese, it is conjugated differently depending on the subject of the sentence. The verb "be" is conjugated as follows:

Subject	Pronunciation	English Translation
က်ြန္ေတာ္	kyun-tar	I
သူ	thu	you (singular)
သူငယ္	thu-nye	you (plural)
ဘာ	ba	he/she/it
အေတာ္မ်ား	atar-ma	we
သူမ်ား	thu-ma	you (plural)
ဘာမ်ား	ba-ma	they

The verb "be" is conjugated as follows:

က်ြန္ေတာ္	kyun-tar	I am
သူ	thu	you (singular) are
သူငယ္	thu-nye	you (plural) are
ဘာ	ba	he/she/it is

Let's look at some examples of how to use the verb "be" in sentences.

• Person 1: က်ြန္ေတာ္ ဘယ္လိုေခၚခဲ့လား? (Kyun-tar ba-li-lo-kwa-gyi-lar?)

Translation: Am I welcome?

• Person 2: ဘယ္လိုေခၚခဲ့ပါ။ (Ba-li-lo-kwa-gyi-pa.)

Translation: Yes, you are welcome.
