Bulgarian Grammar - Adjectives

Hi Bulgarian learners! In today's lesson, we will be discussing the basics of Bulgarian adjectives. Adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns and pronouns. They can be used to express a variety of meanings, such as size, shape, color, origin, material, purpose, and more. Knowing how to use adjectives correctly is essential for speaking and writing in Bulgarian.

Types of Adjectives

In Bulgarian, there are two types of adjectives: descriptive and possessive.

Descriptive Adjectives

Descriptive adjectives are used to describe the qualities of a noun or pronoun. Examples include words like “big”, “small”, “red”, “blue”, “old”, “new”, and so on.

Possessive Adjectives

Possessive adjectives are used to indicate ownership or possession. Examples include words like “my”, “your”, “his”, “her”, “its”, “our”, and “their”.

Adjective Placement

In Bulgarian, adjectives usually come after the noun they modify. For example:

  • Голяма куче (Big dog)
  • Нова книга (New book)

However, there are some exceptions to this rule. For example, when using the verb “to be”, the adjective comes before the noun. For example:

  • Това е голяма куче (This is a big dog)
  • Тази книга е нова (This book is new)

Adjective Agreement

In Bulgarian, adjectives must agree with the nouns they modify in gender, number, and case.

For example, the word for “big” is голям (masculine singular nominative). To make it agree with a feminine noun, you would use голяма (feminine singular nominative). To make it agree with a plural noun, you would use големи (plural nominative).

Conclusion

We hope this lesson has helped you understand the basics of Bulgarian adjectives. With practice, you will be able to use them correctly in your conversations and writing. Please feel free to edit this wiki page if you think it can be improved. 😎
