Malayalam Grammar - Nouns

Hi Malayalam learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing the basics of Malayalam nouns. Nouns are an important part of any language, and understanding them is essential for speaking and writing in Malayalam. We will cover the different types of nouns, their gender, and how to use them in sentences.

Types of Nouns

Nouns can be divided into two main categories: proper nouns and common nouns.

Proper Nouns

Proper nouns are specific names that refer to a particular person, place, or thing. Examples of proper nouns include people's names (e.g. John, Mary), places (e.g. India, Kerala), and things (e.g. Apple, Microsoft). Proper nouns are always written with a capital letter.

Common Nouns

Common nouns are general names that refer to a group of people, places, or things. Examples of common nouns include people (e.g. man, woman), places (e.g. city, country), and things (e.g. book, computer). Common nouns are not written with a capital letter.

Gender

In Malayalam, nouns have two genders: masculine and feminine. Masculine nouns usually end in -ന്‍ (e.g. കഥാന്‍ - story) and feminine nouns usually end in -മ് (e.g. കഥാമ് - story).

Usage

Nouns are used in sentences to refer to people, places, or things. For example:

  • അവന്‍ കഥാന്‍ വായിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. (He is reading a story.)
  • അവള്‍ കഥാമ് വായിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. (She is reading a story.)

In the examples above, the nouns കഥാന്‍ (story) and കഥാമ് (story) are used to refer to the same thing, but they have different genders.

Summary

In this lesson, we discussed the basics of Malayalam nouns. We covered the different types of nouns, their gender, and how to use them in sentences.
