Malayalam Grammar - How to Ask Questions

Hi Malayalam learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing how to ask questions in Malayalam. Asking questions is an important part of any language, and it can be tricky to get the grammar right. But don't worry, by the end of this lesson you will have a good understanding of how to ask questions in Malayalam.

Types of Questions

In Malayalam, there are two types of questions: yes/no questions and wh-questions.

Yes/No Questions

Yes/no questions are questions that can be answered with a simple yes or no. In Malayalam, these questions are formed by adding the particle അതെ (atte) at the end of the sentence. For example:

  • നിങ്ങൾ കഴിഞ്ഞില്ലേ? (Ningal kazhinjille?) - Did you not understand?
  • നിങ്ങൾ കഴിഞ്ഞില്ലാതെ അതെ? (Ningal kazhinjillathe atte?) - Didn't you understand?

Note that the second sentence is the same as the first sentence, but with the particle അതെ (atte) added at the end.

Wh-Questions

Wh-questions are questions that require more information than just a yes or no answer. In Malayalam, these questions are formed by adding the particle എന്താണ് (enthan) at the beginning of the sentence. For example:

  • എന്താണ് നിങ്ങൾ ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നത്? (Enthan ningal cheythirikkunnath?) - What are you doing?
  • എന്താണ് നിങ്ങൾ ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നില്ലാതെ അതെ? (Enthan ningal cheythirikkunnillathe atte?) - What didn't you do?

Note that the second sentence is the same as the first sentence, but with the particle അതെ (atte) added at the end.

Other Tips

Here are some other tips for asking questions in Malayalam:

  • Use the appropriate intonation when asking questions. This will help make your questions sound more natural.
  • When asking a question, use the appropriate verb form. For example, if you are asking a question about the past, use the past tense verb form.
  • When asking a question, use the appropriate word order. In Malayalam, the verb usually comes at the end of the sentence.
  • When asking a question, use the appropriate pronouns. For example, if you are asking a question about someone else, use the appropriate pronoun for that person.
  • When asking a question, use the appropriate particles. As we saw earlier, the particles അതെ (atte) and എന്താണ് (enthan) are used to form yes/no questions and wh-questions respectively.

If you have any questions, please ask them in the comments section below.
