Swedish is a Scandinavian language spoken by approximately 10.4 million speakers, mainly in Sweden and Finland, the two countries where it is an official language. Like the other Scandinavian languages, it comes from Old Norse, the common language of all the Germanic peoples of Scandinavia during the Viking Age. It remains today mutually intelligible with Danish and Norwegian. The written and spoken language is standardized, but there are regional variants from the old rural dialects.
Like most Germanic languages, Swedish is a V2 language: the verb appears in second position in the main clauses. The morphology presents a reduced number of flexions. There are two genders (common and neuter) and two numbers (singular and plural), but no cases. By default, the definite article is a postposed clitic, but there are also separate articles. The adjective agrees with the noun in gender and in number, but also according to its definite character or not. Phonologically, Swedish has a significant number of vowels, as well as a distinctive consonant, the sj, the exact phonetic realization of which varies between dialects and remains debated.
