Greetings in French

To say hello in French here are the most simple ways:

  1. If you already know the person you can say: salut !
  2. If you don't know the person you have to say: bonjour !

Bonjour ! neutral A polite way to say good morning , good day in French
Hello ! informal Most common way to say hello in French
Salut ! informal Hi : Greeting friends and family
Coucou ! informal Use hey! with all  friends and family. 
Bonsoir ! neutral When you greet someone with “Hello” in French in the evening.
Rebonjour ! informal Hello again“ If you’ve already said hello to someone and run into them again.
Ça va ? informal Meaning: “How’s it going?”  Litteraly “does it go?”
Tu vas bien ? neutral How’s it going?”  approximation to say like “does it go?”
Au plaisir formal Literally "with pleasure". said when parting.
Enchanté(e) ! formal Pleased to meet you after you greet someone
Quoi de neuf ? informal Literally means “what's new?”. Meaning : what's up?
Au revoir neutral Goodbye, a formula used to another person or persons when person addressed is departing.
