Halh Mongolian Grammar - Future Tense

Hi Halh Mongolian learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about the future tense in Halh Mongolian. We will look at how to form the future tense, as well as some examples of how it is used.

The future tense in Halh Mongolian is formed by adding the suffix -на to the verb stem. This suffix is added to the end of the verb stem, regardless of the person or number. For example, the verb "to go" is байх (baih). To form the future tense, the suffix -на is added to the end of the verb stem, resulting in байхна (baihná).

The following table provides some examples of verbs in the future tense:

Halh Mongolian Pronunciation English Translation
байхна baihná to go
явна yavná to come
хийна khíiná to do
уншина unshiná to read
сонирхна sonirkhná to write

The future tense can be used to express a variety of meanings, such as predictions, promises, and intentions. For example, the sentence "I will go tomorrow" can be expressed in Halh Mongolian as "Би маргааш байхна" (Bi margaash baihná). Here, the verb байхна (baihná) is in the future tense, expressing the speaker's intention to go tomorrow.

The future tense can also be used to express predictions. For example, the sentence "It will rain tomorrow" can be expressed in Halh Mongolian as "Маргааш цагаан уулан байхна" (Margaash tsagaan uulan baihná). Here, the verb байхна (baihná) is in the future tense, expressing the speaker's prediction that it will rain tomorrow.

The future tense can also be used to express promises. For example, the sentence "I will help you" can be expressed in Halh Mongolian as "Би танд туслахна" (Bi tand tuslakhná). Here, the verb туслахна (tuslakhná) is in the future tense, expressing the speaker's promise to help the other person.
