Armenian is a language which constitutes in itself a branch of the Indo-European language family, being the only one of this family to be more agglutinating than inflectional.
- Classical Armenian (or Grabar: in Armenian Գրաբար, literally "written language") is attested from the fifth century and carries a rich theological, historical, poetic, mystical and epic literature.
- Eastern Armenian, the official language of the Republic of Armenia, spoken by the inhabitants of Armenia and the Armenian communities of Iran and Russia.
- Western Armenian, spoken by the Armenian diaspora, coexist. 2,960,000 people speak it in Armenia in 2013, for a total of 3,843,000 worldwide.
Armenian has many similarities with ancient Greek (etymological parallels, use of the augment, particular treatment of laryngeal Indo-European, etc.), as pointed out by the French linguist Antoine Meillet. On the other hand, the consonants of Proto-Armenian underwent the first consonant mutation (Grimm's law), which brings it closer to Germanic languages for its phonological physiognomy.
