Hi Gujarati learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about Gujarati pronouns. Pronouns are used in place of a noun to avoid duplication and add clarity to sentences. They help avoid repetition and make writing more concise. Let's get started!

What are Pronouns?[edit | edit source]

Pronouns are words that take the place of nouns. The most common pronouns in Gujarati include:

Gujarati Pronunciation English
હું hun I
તું tun you (singular)
તમે tame you (plural)
અવનો avno he/him
આવીને aavine she/her
તેમનો temno they/them

Types of Pronouns[edit | edit source]

Personal Pronouns[edit | edit source]

Personal pronouns refer to specific people or objects.

Example:

  • હું ગમો ખાશે. (hun ghamo khashe.) - I like spinach.
  • તું ખુબ તાજી લાઈટ સમજેલી. (tun khub taji light samajeli.) - You understand the new light system well.
  • તમે કેમ છો? (tame kem cho?) - How are you (plural)?

Possessive Pronouns[edit | edit source]

Possessive pronouns indicate ownership of a noun or an object.

Example:

  • મેંગો મારુ છે. (mango maru che.) - The mango is mine.
  • તમારું ઘર સાફ છે. (tamara ghar saaf che.) - Your (singular) house is clean.
  • આપણે અમારી કિતાબો કાઢી લીધી નથી. (apani amari kitaabo kadhi lidhi nathi.) - We haven't picked up our books.

Reflexive Pronouns[edit | edit source]

Reflexive pronouns are used when the subject and object are the same.

Example:

  • જોઈએ, અવને પ્રેમ છે. (joie, avne prem che.) - Look, he loves himself.
  • આવીને પ્રેમ પામે છે. (aavine prem pame che.) - She finds love in herself.

Interrogative Pronouns[edit | edit source]

Interrogative pronouns are used for asking questions.

Example:

  • કોણ અવનો જીવન બચાવે છે? (kon avno jeevan bachave che?) - Who is saving his life?
  • સમય ક્યાંથી શરૂ થાય છે? (samay kyathhi sharu thaye che?) - When does the time start?

Demonstrative Pronouns[edit | edit source]

Demonstrative pronouns point out specific objects or people.

Example:

  • આ પાણી ઠંડુ છે. (a pani thandu che.) - This water is cold.
  • આપણી કેટલી ગ્લાસ પણ છરી નથી. (apani ketali glass pan chari nathi.) - We don't have any clean glasses.

Relative Pronouns[edit | edit source]

Relative pronouns are used to join one clause to another.

Example:

  • જે વ્યક્તિ વિવાહ કરે છે, તેઓ સચોટ હોય છે. (je vyakti vivah kare che, teo sachot hoy che.) - The person who gets married is faithful.
  • જે સૂરજ ના ઉગામથી આપણે સંતોષ મળે છે. (je suraj na ugmathi apani santo ash male che.) - We get happiness from the sunrise.

Dialogue[edit | edit source]

  • પર્સન 1: હું તમને પ્રેમ કરું છું. (hun tamne prem karu chu.) - I love you.
  • પર્સન 2: હું પણ તમને પ્રેમ કરું છું. (hun pan tamne prem karu chu.) - I also love you.
  • પર્સન 1: હું મારી ઇછાઓ પૂરી કરું છું. (hun mari ichhao puri karu chu.) - I fulfill my desires.
  • પર્સન 2: તમે સમજદાર હોવું જોઈએ. (tame samajadar hovu joie.) - You should be intelligent.
