== Overview ==
== Formation of Plurals in Macedonian ==

Macedonian is a Slavic language spoken by about 2 million people in the Republic of Macedonia and its neighboring countries. It has a rich and complex grammar system, and one of the most important aspects of this system is the formation of plurals.
In [https://polyglotclub.com/language/macedonian Macedonian], like any language, there are rules for forming plurals. The general rule is to add the suffix ‘-i’ to the stem, although there are exceptions to this rule. Let's examine each of these rules in detail.

In Macedonian, there are two main ways to form plurals: by adding a suffix to the end of the word, or by changing the stem of the word. We will look at both of these methods in more detail below.
=== Singular Nouns ending with a vowel ===

=== Suffixes ===
If a singular noun ends with a vowel, add the suffix ‘-ја’ to form the plural. Examples are shown below:

The most common way to form plurals in Macedonian is by adding a suffix to the end of the word. The suffixes used depend on the gender of the noun, as well as its ending.
{| class="wikitable"
! Macedonian !! Pronunciation !! English
|-
| стол (stol) || stɔl || table
|-
| столја (stolja) || stɔʎa || tables
|-
| кафе (kafe) || kafɛ || coffee
|-
| кафеја (kafeja) || kafɛja || cups of coffee
|}

For masculine nouns, the suffixes used are -и (singular) and -ите (plural). For example, the word друг (friend) becomes други (friends) in the plural.
=== Singular Nouns ending with a consonant ===

For feminine nouns, the suffixes used are -а (singular) and -и (plural). For example, the word пријателка (female friend) becomes пријателки (female friends) in the plural.
If a singular noun ends with a consonant, add the suffix ‘-и’ to form the plural. Examples are shown below:

For neuter nouns, the suffixes used are -о (singular) and -а (plural). For example, the word моме (mother) becomes момиња (mothers) in the plural.
{| class="wikitable"
! Macedonian !! Pronunciation !! English
|-
| книга (kniga) || kniga || book
|-
| книги (knigi) || knigi || books
|-
| машина (mašina) || maʃina || car
|-
| машини (mašini) || maʃini || cars
|}

=== Stem Changes ===
=== Singular Nouns ending with ‘-o’ and ‘-e’ ===

Another way to form plurals in Macedonian is by changing the stem of the word. This is done by adding a consonant to the beginning of the word, or by changing the vowel in the middle of the word.
If a singular noun ends with ‘-о’ or ‘-е’, add the suffix ‘-а’ to form the plural. Examples are shown below:

For example, the word дете (child) becomes деца (children) in the plural. Here, the stem of the word has been changed from дет- to дец-.
{| class="wikitable"
! Macedonian !! Pronunciation !! English
|-
| кино (kino) || kino || cinema
|-
| кина (kina) || kina || cinemas
|-
| око (oko) || oko || eye
|-
| очи (oči) || ɔtʃi || eyes
|}

Similarly, the word куќа (house) becomes куќи (houses) in the plural. Here, the stem of the word has been changed from куќ- to куќи-.
=== Singular Nouns ending with ‘-ње’ ===

== Examples ==
If a singular noun ends with ‘-ње’, remove the ‘-ње’ ending and add the suffix ‘-ња’ to form the plural. Examples are shown below:

Let's look at some examples of how these rules are applied in practice.

Let's get started! 🚀

Formation of Plurals in Macedonian[edit | edit source]

In Macedonian, like any language, there are rules for forming plurals. The general rule is to add the suffix ‘-i’ to the stem, although there are exceptions to this rule. Let's examine each of these rules in detail.

Singular Nouns ending with a vowel[edit | edit source]

If a singular noun ends with a vowel, add the suffix ‘-ја’ to form the plural. Examples are shown below:

Macedonian Pronunciation English
стол (stol) stɔl table
столја (stolja) stɔʎa tables
кафе (kafe) kafɛ coffee
кафеја (kafeja) kafɛja cups of coffee

Singular Nouns ending with a consonant[edit | edit source]

If a singular noun ends with a consonant, add the suffix ‘-и’ to form the plural. Examples are shown below:

Macedonian Pronunciation English
книга (kniga) kniga book
книги (knigi) knigi books
машина (mašina) maʃina car
машини (mašini) maʃini cars

Singular Nouns ending with ‘-o’ and ‘-e’[edit | edit source]

If a singular noun ends with ‘-о’ or ‘-е’, add the suffix ‘-а’ to form the plural. Examples are shown below:

Macedonian Pronunciation English
кино (kino) kino cinema
кина (kina) kina cinemas
око (oko) oko eye
очи (oči) ɔtʃi eyes

Singular Nouns ending with ‘-ње’[edit | edit source]

If a singular noun ends with ‘-ње’, remove the ‘-ње’ ending and add the suffix ‘-ња’ to form the plural. Examples are shown below:

Macedonian Pronunciation English
куче (kuče) kutʃe dog
кучиња (kuchiњa) kutʃiɲa dogs
душе (duše) duʃe soul
душиња (dušiњa) duʃiɲa souls

Irregular Nouns[edit | edit source]

Some nouns in Macedonian are irregular and do not follow the above rules. Examples are shown below:

Macedonian Pronunciation English
човек (čovek) tʃɔvɛk human
леб (leb) lɛb bread
ден (den) dɛn day
деца (deca) dɛtsa children

Dialogue[edit | edit source]

  • Person 1: Имаш ли коњи? (Do you have horses?)
  • Person 2: Да, имам три. (Yes, I have three.)
  • Person 1: Каде се наоѓаат книгите? (Where are the books?)
  • Person 2: Во библиотеката се наоѓаат. (The books are in the library.)
