En VOITURE, Simone! (sounds a bit old but still largely used)[edit | edit source]

Let's go! (a reference to one of the first women to get into car racing in the 1930s. She was named: Simone Louise de Pinet de Borde des Forest! The expression was made popular in the 1960s by a famous game show host while addressing one of his co-hosts named Simone.

  • Examples: "En voiture Simone, c’est moi qui conduis, c’est toi qui klaxonnes !" (from the game show). "En voiture Simone, on est parti!"

Partir/démarrer sur les chapeaux de ROUES[edit | edit source]

getting off to a flying start (related to some car driving or figuratively)

  • Examples: "Quand le voleur a entendu les sirènes de police il est parti sur les chapeaux de roues", "A l'université, il a démarré sur les chapeaux de roues puis ses résultats sont devenus médiocres"

Mettre la GOMME[edit | edit source]

to speed/hurry up, literally: to lay rubber ("gomme" is used as a noun meaning a rubber/eraser but is also used in some expressions for the material tires are made of: "des pneus à gomme tendre" though generally French use "caoutchouc" instead of "gomme")

  • Example: "va falloir qu'on mette la gomme pour finir le projet à temps"
