Money and Currency in Tajik

In this lesson, we will learn vocabulary related to money and currency in Tajik, including the names of coins and bills, as well as common financial transactions. Tajikistan uses the Tajik somoni (TJS), which was introduced to replace the Tajikistani ruble after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Let's dive in!

Coins and Bills

In Tajikistan, there are several coins and bills in circulation. Below is a list of the most common ones:

Coins

Tajik Pronunciation English Translation
пула pu-lah 1 diram (one-hundredth of a somoni)
2 дирам dva deeram 2 dirams (two-hundredths of a somoni)
5 дирам pyat' deeram 5 dirams (five-hundredths of a somoni)
10 дирам desyat' deeram 10 dirams (one-tenth of a somoni)

Bills

The following are the most common Tajik banknotes:

Tajik Pronunciation English Translation
20 сомонӣ dvadtsat somoni 20 somoni
50 сомонӣ pyat'desyat somoni 50 somoni
100 сомонӣ sto somoni 100 somoni
200 сомонӣ dvesti somoni 200 somoni
500 сомонӣ pyatsot somoni 500 somoni

It is important to note that in Tajikistan, the numbers on the bills are also written in Tajik language script in addition to Arabic numerals.

Financial Transactions

Understanding the language used in financial transactions is key to successful shopping and negotiating in Tajikistan. The following vocabulary can be used in a variety of financial situations:

  • пули ман гирифтам – I got my money
  • қанча мегирад? – How much does it cost?
  • нишонаи харид кунед, лутфан – Please give me a receipt
  • бе-гуна омадӣ – It's free of charge
  • ҳамзақулоб – Credit card
  • тоҷик сомонӣ ин ҷо мекунад – Tajik somoni is accepted here

Interesting Facts

  • The Tajik somoni was named after Ismail Samani, a 10th-century Samanid ruler.
  • The Tajik somoni is one of the few currencies in the world to feature a living person on its banknotes – Ismoil Somoni himself.
  • Historically, Tajikistan also used the Soviet ruble and the Russian ruble as legal tender.
  • Currency exchange can be done easily at banks, exchange offices, or in some cases at bazaars, but be aware of inflated exchange rates and counterfeit money.
  • As of May 2021, 1 US dollar is equivalent to approximately 11.34 Tajik somoni.
