Northern Uzbek Grammar → Basic Sentence Structures → Subject-Verb Agreement

As a Northern Uzbek language teacher with 20 years of experience, I am excited to guide you through the basics of sentence structures in this lesson on subject-verb agreement. In this lesson, we will learn how to use different subject pronouns with different verb forms. With this knowledge, you will be able to form grammatically correct sentences in Northern Uzbek and communicate more effectively.

Take some time to dive into these other pages after completing this lesson: Past Tense & Formal and informal YOU.

Subject Pronouns

In Northern Uzbek, subject pronouns are used to specify who or what is performing an action in a sentence. Here are some of the most common subject pronouns in Northern Uzbek:

Northern Uzbek Pronunciation English Translation
men /men/ I
sen /sen/ you (singular)
u /u/ he/she/it
biz /biz/ we
siz /siz/ you (formal or plural)
ular /ular/ they

Note that the pronoun 'u' is used for he/she/it, and its specific meaning is usually implied by the context of the sentence.

Verb Forms

Verbs in Northern Uzbek change depending on the subject pronoun used in a sentence. Here are some examples of how verbs change with different subject pronouns:

Northern Uzbek Pronunciation English Translation
men yuraman /men juraˈman/ I walk
sen yurasan /sen juraˈsan/ You (singular) walk
u yuradi /u juraˈdi/ He/she/it walks
biz yuramiz /biz juraˈmiz/ We walk
siz yurasiz /siz juraˈsiz/ You (formal or plural) walk
ular yuradilar /uˈlar juraˈdilar/ They walk

In the examples above, we can see that the verb form changes depending on the subject pronoun used. This is known as subject-verb agreement: the subject and verb must agree in number and person.

It's worth noting that there are exceptions to these general rules of subject-verb agreement in Northern Uzbek. In some cases, verbs may not change at all, or only in certain tenses or contexts.

Using Subject Pronouns and Verbs in Sentences

Now that we understand subject pronouns and verb forms in Northern Uzbek, let's practice using them in sentences. Here are some examples:

  • Men kitob o'qiman. (I read a book.)
  • Sen uchrashgansanmi? (Did you meet him/her?)
  • U yaxshi ishlar qiladi. (He/She does good work.)
  • Biz birga yuramiz. (We walk together.)
  • Siz nima qilasiz? (What are you doing?)
  • Ular Turkiston bilan savdo qilishadi. (They do business with Uzbekistan.)

Notice how the verb form changes depending on the subject pronoun used in each sentence.

Remember that practice is key when it comes to mastering subject-verb agreement in Northern Uzbek. Try to use these subject pronouns and verb forms in your own sentences to reinforce your understanding of this grammar concept.
