In this lesson, we are going to learn vocabulary related to education. Education is highly valued in Russia, and there is a great emphasis on academic achievement.

Education in Russia is compulsory from age 6 to 15. There are three levels of education: primary, secondary and higher education. Secondary education is from age 11 to 15 and includes two types of schools: general education schools and vocational schools, which prepare students for industrial work. Higher education is from age 16 and can be acquired in universities or institutes.

Here is some vocabulary you might hear in relation to the school system:

Example dialogue:

  • У тебя какая оценка по математике? (U tebya kakaya otsenka po matematike?) - What grade do you have in math?

Universities[edit | edit source]

Higher education in Russia is highly valued and there are over 850 universities in the country. To gain admission, students must take the Unified State Exam (ЕГЭ) after finishing school. Here are some key terms you might hear:
