Plurals are words that refer to more than one person, place, or thing. In Tatar, plurals are formed by adding suffixes to the end of nouns. The suffixes used depend on the gender and number of the noun.

In addition, some nouns do not change at all when forming plurals. For example, the word for "person" is insan, and the plural form is also insan.
In some cases, the singular noun may end in a vowel, in which case we add "-y" before adding the "-lar" suffix. For example:

Tatar Grammar - Plurals

Hi Tatar learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about plurals in Tatar grammar. If you want to improve your Tatar grammar in general, you can also check out the Grammar page on the Polyglot Club website. If you want to practice your Tatar with native speakers, you can use the website to find native speakers and ask them any questions! So let's get started with plurals in Tatar.

Forming Plurals[edit | edit source]

In Tatar, we usually form plurals by adding the suffix "-lar" to the end of the singular noun. For example:

Tatar Pronunciation English
шәхес shäxes person
шәхес-ләр shäxes-lär people

In some cases, the singular noun may end in a vowel, in which case we add "-y" before adding the "-lar" suffix. For example:

Tatar Pronunciation English
абый abıy father
абый-лар abıy-lar fathers

In a few cases, there may be irregular plurals that do not follow these rules. For example:

Tatar Pronunciation English
кар kar snow
кар-тар kar-tar snows

Counting with Plurals[edit | edit source]

When counting nouns in Tatar, we use the plural form of the noun in most cases. For example:

Tatar Pronunciation English
бир шәхес bir shäxes one person
иккә шәхес ikkä shäxes two people
уч шәхес uch shäxes three people
төрт шәхес tört shäxes four people
биш шәхес bish shäxes ten people

However, when counting certain objects, we use the singular form of the noun. For example:

Tatar Pronunciation English
бир китап bir kitap one book
иккә китап ikkä kitap two books
уч китап uch kitap three books
төрт китап tört kitap four books
биш китап bish kitap ten books

Possessive Plurals[edit | edit source]

When we are talking about something that belongs to a group of people, we use the plural form of the possessive suffix. For example:

Tatar Pronunciation English
мәхәбәт-им mähäbät-im my love (singular)
мәхәбәт-ләрең mähäbät-läreñ your (pl.) love
мәхәбәт-емез mähäbät-emez our love

Dialogue[edit | edit source]

Let's see plurals in action in a dialogue between two people:

  • Person 1: Беренче сабында үзче кар көперешү бар иди. (Berenchä sabında üzche kar köpereshü bar idi.) (In the first snowfall, there were many snowflakes.)
  • Person 2: Аларҙың Татарстанда үч-дәрәҗә көп булырга кәрәк иде. (Alarğıñ Tatarstanda üç-däräcä köp bulırğa käräk ide.) (We need three layers of them in Tatarstan during winter.)
