Tatar Grammar - Adjectives

Hi Tatar learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will dive deeper into Tatar grammar and focus on adjectives. Adjectives are an essential part of speech and play a crucial role in language. They add color to the language and describe how things look, feel, and sound.

Once you've mastered this lesson, take a look at these related pages: Plurals, Gender, Personal Pronouns & Conjunctions.

What are adjectives in Tatar?[edit | edit source]

In Tatar, adjectives are words that modify nouns and pronouns. They provide additional information about the subject of the sentence. Adjectives can describe the color, size, shape, and other characteristics of a noun or pronoun. They can be a single word or a phrase. For example, in the sentence "The red apple is juicy," "red" is the adjective that describes the apple.

The placement of adjectives in Tatar[edit | edit source]

In Tatar, the adjective usually follows the noun. For example, "qara kitap" (black book), "täki kitap" (thick book). However, when the adjective is used to describe a personal quality or characteristic, it comes before the noun. For example, "uzır yul" (long road) and "çulpan yulı" (friendly road).

Comparative and superlative adjectives in Tatar[edit | edit source]

In Tatar, comparative and superlative adjectives are formed by adding specific suffixes. Here are the most commonly used suffixes:

- "ыраңлы" is used to form the comparative degree of an adjective. For example, "uzıraq ыраңлы" (longer), "qarışığ ыраңлы" (darker). - "тыныш" is used to form the superlative degree of an adjective. For example, "uzıraq тыныш" (the longest), "qarışığ тыныш" (the darkest).

Here's a dialogue to help you understand the comparative and superlative degrees better:

  • Person 1: Тыңғы китапны күрәсең, шигырылсын. (If you look at the last book, it's thicker.)
  • Person 2: Алардан ике беренче китап тыныш түгел. (Of the two, the third book is the thickest.)
