Modern Greek (1453-)Vocabulary → Family and relationships

As a Modern Greek (1453-) language teacher, I believe that understanding the basic vocabulary related to family and relationships is important when learning the language. In this lesson, we will learn the names of family members and basic vocabulary related to relationships.

Family members

Learning the names of family members in Greek is important when meeting new people or when talking about your family. Here are some of the most common family members and their translations in English:

Modern Greek (1453-) Pronunciation English
ο πατέρας o patéras father
η μητέρα i mitéra mother
ο αδερφός o aderfós brother
η αδερφή i aderfí sister
ο γιος o yios son
η κόρη i kóri daughter
ο παππούς o papoús grandfather
η γιαγιά i yiayiá grandmother

Other family members include:

  • ο ξάδερφος (o xáderfos) - cousin (male)
  • η ξαδέρφη (i xadhérfi) - cousin (female)
  • το ανιψάκι (to anipsáki) - nephew
  • η ανιψιά (i anipsiá) - niece
  • ο θείος (o thíos) - uncle
  • η θεία (i thía) - aunt

Relationships

Here are some basic vocabulary words related to relationships:

  • ο έρωτας (o érotas) - love
  • η φιλία (i filía) - friendship
  • η σχέση (i schési) - relationship
  • ο γάμος (o gámos) - marriage
  • ο χωρισμός (o chorismós) - divorce
  • ο σύντροφος (o síntropos) - partner
  • οι γονείς (i gónes) - parents
  • τα παιδιά (ta pediá) - children

It is important to keep in mind that some of these words have additional meanings in different contexts.

Conversation Examples

Here are some examples of conversations in Greek related to family and relationships:

Meeting family members

  • Αυτός είναι ο πατέρας μου. (Aftós íne o patéras mou) - This is my father.
  • Αυτή είναι η ξαδέρφη μου. (Aftí íne i xadhérfi mou) - This is my cousin (female).

Talking about relationships

  • Τι σχέση έχεις με αυτόν; (Ti schési ékhis me aftón?) - What kind of relationship do you have with him?
  • Είσαι παντρεμένος/παντρεμένη; (Íse pantedémenos/pantedémeni?) - Are you married?

Culture

The Greek family is often considered the most important aspect of Greek culture. Greeks value their family and spend a lot of time with them. Sunday lunch with extended family members is a common tradition in Greece. Weddings are also an important part of Greek culture and are typically very large affairs with many family members and friends in attendance.

Practice

If you know a Greek speaker, try practicing having a conversation about family and relationships in Greek. If you do not know anyone who speaks Greek, try writing a dialogue between two people talking about their family and relationships.
