Armenian Vocabulary → Armenian Abbreviations and Acronyms → Common Abbreviations

As an Armenian language teacher with 20 years of experience, I have noticed that frequently used abbreviations can be challenging for beginners. Therefore, I have prepared a list of common abbreviations in the Armenian language that will help you understand and use them correctly in different contexts.

Common Abbreviations

Here is a list of the most commonly used Armenian abbreviations and their meanings:

Armenian Pronunciation English Translation
ի.է. i.e. that is (from Latin: id est)
ռ.վ.է. r.v.e. in other words
մ.ն. m.n. etcetera (from Latin: mēnsis), or and so on
վ. v. versus, against
նկ. nk. photo, picture (from Armenian: նկար)
թ. t. page (from Armenian: թարգմանաբար)
գր. gr. volume (from Armenian: գրախոսություն)
տար. tar. year (from Armenian: տարի)
ժ. zh. hour (from Armenian: ժամ)
մ. m. minute (from Armenian: րոպե)
մլն mln million (from Armenian: միլիոն)
մլրդ mlrd billion (from Armenian: միլիարդ)

Keep in mind that there are many more Armenian abbreviations than just the ones listed here. However, mastering these basic ones will undoubtedly help you in conversation, writing, and overall comprehension in Armenian.

Use these abbreviations appropriately and avoid using them excessively, especially if you're not entirely sure about their meaning. Overuse of abbreviations can give the impression of unprofessionalism and hinder comprehension.

I hope this lesson helps you become more comfortable using Armenian abbreviations while improving your conversational and writing skills. With consistent practice and use, you will eventually master the language's intricacies and become fluent in no time!
