Halh Mongolian Vocabulary → Basic Halh Mongolian Vocabulary → Days, Months, and Seasons

As a Halh Mongolian language teacher, I find it crucial to incorporate cultural information and interesting facts into my lessons. In this lesson, we will cover the basic vocabulary related to time in Halh Mongolian, including the names of the days of the week, the months of the year, and the different seasons. Understanding how time is perceived and expressed in different cultures is a great way to expand your knowledge and appreciation for the language.

Days of the Week

In Halh Mongolian, the names of the days of the week are derived from the Chinese language. While in Western cultures, the names of the days of the week are named after Norse gods and goddesses, Halh Mongolian names are based on the Five Elements theory in Chinese philosophy.

Here are the names of the days of the week in Halh Mongolian, along with their Chinese equivalent and their English translations:

Halh Mongolian Chinese English
Даваа 星期一 (Xīngqī yī) Monday
Мягмар 星期二 (Xīngqī èr) Tuesday
Лхагва 星期三 (Xīngqī sān) Wednesday
Пүрэв 星期四 (Xīngqī sì) Thursday
Баасан 星期五 (Xīngqī wǔ) Friday
Бямба 星期六 (Xīngqī liù) Saturday
Ням 星期日 (Xīngqī rì) Sunday

It is important to note that the Halh Mongolian names for the days of the week can differ among different dialects and regions in Mongolia.

Months of the Year

The names of the months of the year in Halh Mongolian are closely related to the natural phenomena that occur during that particular month. Here are the Halh Mongolian names of the months of the year, along with their English translations:

  • Нэгдүгээр сар (Negdügeer sar) - January
  • Хоёрдугаар сар (Khoürdugaar sar) - February
  • Гуравдугаар сар (Güravdugaar sar) - March
  • Дөрөвдүгээр сар (Dörövdügeer sar) - April

It is important to note that Halh Mongolian months use a lunar calendar, which means that they have 29 to 30 days each, resulting in a total of 354 to 355 days in a year.

Seasons

Like the rest of the Northern Hemisphere, Mongolia has four distinct seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter. Here are the Halh Mongolian names for each season, along with their English translations:

  • Бус (Bus) - Spring
  • Өвөл (Övöl) - Summer
  • Навч (Navch) - Fall
  • Хагас (Hagas) - Winter

It is important to note that the names of the seasons in Halh Mongolian are similar to those of other Mongolian dialects.
