Bambara Grammar - Conditional Mood

Hi Bambara learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing the conditional mood in Bambara. This is an important part of the language and understanding it will help you to communicate more effectively.

Overview

The conditional mood is used to express a hypothetical situation or a wish. It is also used to express politeness and respect. In Bambara, the conditional mood is formed by adding certain suffixes to the verb.

Formation

The conditional mood is formed by adding the following suffixes to the verb:

  • -a: Used for verbs ending in a consonant.
  • -e: Used for verbs ending in a vowel.

For example, the verb "kɛ" (to do) becomes "kɛa" in the conditional mood.

Usage

The conditional mood is used in the following situations:

  • To express a hypothetical situation:

For example:

"Kɛa bɛ sɔrɔ" (If I had money).

  • To express a wish:

For example:

"Kɛa bɛ kɔnɔ" (I wish I could go).

  • To express politeness and respect:

For example:

"Kɛa bɛ sɔrɔ" (If you please).

Examples

Here are some examples of sentences using the conditional mood:

  • Kɛa bɛ sɔrɔ, mɔgɔw bɛ yɛrɛ fɔ. (If I had money, I would buy a house.)
  • Kɛa bɛ kɔnɔ, mɔgɔw bɛ tɔgɔ. (If I could go, I would travel.)
  • Kɛa bɛ sɔrɔ, mɔgɔw bɛ kɔnɔ. (If you please, I would go.)
