Panjabi Grammar - Nouns

Hi Panjabi learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing the basics of Panjabi nouns. We will look at the different types of nouns, how to form them, and how to use them in sentences. By the end of this lesson, you should have a good understanding of Panjabi nouns.

Types of Nouns

There are three main types of nouns in Panjabi: common nouns, proper nouns, and collective nouns.

Common Nouns

Common nouns are the most basic type of nouns. They refer to general things, such as people, places, animals, and objects. Examples of common nouns include: ਮਾਨੂੰ (man), ਘਰ (house), ਗਾਯ (cow), and ਕਾਲਜ (pen).

Proper Nouns

Proper nouns are specific names of people, places, or things. They always begin with a capital letter. Examples of proper nouns include: ਅਮਰਿੰਦਰ (Amarinder), ਪੰਜਾਬ (Punjab), ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਅਮਰਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ (Shaheed Amarinder Singh), and ਤਾਜ਼ਮੀਨ (Taj Mahal).

Collective Nouns

Collective nouns refer to groups of people, animals, or things. Examples of collective nouns include: ਗਿਰਾਵਤ (herd), ਗਿਆਨ (knowledge), and ਸਮੂਹ (group).

Formation of Nouns

Nouns can be formed in several ways in Panjabi.

Compound Nouns

Compound nouns are formed by combining two or more words. Examples of compound nouns include: ਗਾਇਕ (singer), ਗਾਡੀ (car), and ਗਾਲਿਆਂ (words).

Derived Nouns

Derived nouns are formed by adding suffixes to existing words. Examples of derived nouns include: ਗਾਇਕੀ (singing), ਗਾਡੀਆਂ (cars), and ਗਾਲਿਆਂਦੀ (of words).

Compound-Derived Nouns

Compound-derived nouns are formed by combining two or more words and adding suffixes. Examples of compound-derived nouns include: ਗਾਇਕੀਆਂ (singers), ਗਾਡੀਆਂਦੀ (of cars), and ਗਾਲਿਆਂਦੀਆਂ (of words).

Usage of Nouns

Nouns can be used in various ways in Panjabi.

Nouns as Subjects

Nouns can be used as the subject of a sentence. For example:

  • ਗਾਇਕ ਗਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। (The singer is singing.)
  • ਗਾਡੀ ਚਲਦੀ ਹੈ। (The car is moving.)
  • ਗਾਲਿਆਂ ਬੋਲੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ। (The words are being spoken.)

Nouns as Objects

Nouns can also be used as the object of a sentence. For example:

  • ਮੈਂ ਗਾਇਕ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਣ ਰਹਿਆ ਹਾਂ। (I am listening to the singer.)
  • ਉਹ ਗਾਡੀ ਨੂੰ ਚਲਾ ਰਹਿਆ ਹੈ। (He is driving the car.)
  • ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਗਾਲਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਪਸੰਦ ਆਈ। (She liked the sound of the words.)

Conclusion

We have now looked at the different types of nouns, how to form them, and how to use them in sentences. With this knowledge, you should now have a good understanding of Panjabi nouns.
