Georgian Grammar - Plurals

Learning the plural forms of Georgian words is an essential part of mastering the language. Plurals are used to indicate more than one of something, and they can be tricky to get right. In this lesson, we'll look at the rules for forming plurals in Georgian, and how to use them correctly.

Nouns

In Georgian, nouns have two different plural forms: the regular plural and the irregular plural. The regular plural is formed by adding the suffix -ebi to the end of the word. For example, the word for "book" is წიგნი (tsigni), and the plural form is წიგნები (tsignebi).

The irregular plural is formed by changing the stem of the word. For example, the word for "person" is პიროვნება (pirveloba), and the plural form is პიროვნები (pirvelobebi).

Adjectives

Adjectives also have two different plural forms. The regular plural is formed by adding the suffix -ebi to the end of the word. For example, the word for "beautiful" is საყვარელი (sakvarelii), and the plural form is საყვარელები (sakvarelebi).

The irregular plural is formed by changing the stem of the word. For example, the word for "happy" is გამარჯობადი (gamarjvebadi), and the plural form is გამარჯობები (gamarjvebebi).

Verbs

Verbs also have two different plural forms. The regular plural is formed by adding the suffix -ebi to the end of the word. For example, the word for "to write" is ჩაწერა (chacera), and the plural form is ჩაწერები (chacerebi).

The irregular plural is formed by changing the stem of the word. For example, the word for "to read" is წაკითხვა (tsakitxva), and the plural form is წაკითხები (tsakitxvebi).

Practice

Now that you know the rules for forming plurals in Georgian, it's time to practice! Here are some examples of words in their singular and plural forms:

  • სახელი (saxeli) - name - სახელები (saxeleebi) - names
  • მოთხოვნა (motxovna) - request - მოთხოვნები (motxovnebi) - requests
  • სურვილი (survil) - wish - სურვილები (survilebi) - wishes
  • მოთამაშე (motamase) - player - მოთამაშები (motamasebi) - players
